"In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters." -Genesis 1:1-2
The best place to start is often at the beginning.
In the AbunDANCE studio, we just finished our first week of classes and have breathed in the beginning of an amazing year. Children fill the room with their hair pulled tight. Pink tulle and silky skirts pass by and smiles spill like waterfalls from eager hearts. Eyes look around in wonder as leather-clad feet prepare to do what they love - dance.
But who gave these precious spirits that desire? Who ignited that passion to move?
I believe God did.
The reason I believe this goes back to the beginning.
Genesis 1:1 says that "In the beginning, God created..."
God is our Creator. He is creative. As His children, we have the honor and privilege to reflect Him. We have access to His divine and creative character. We can express His character through expressions of creativity just as He expressed His character through all of His Creation.
Genesis continues in verse 1:2 that, "the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters."
Strong's Concordance says that the word used here for hovering (H7363) can mean to move or flutter in a relaxed way. For me, 'hover' conjures the image of levitation.
Hold out your hands in front of you, palms down, over your lap or desk. Now gently, relaxed, keep your palms down and sway your hands from side to side. Wiggle your fingers slightly.
Your hands are hovering, moving, fluttering, over your lap or desk.
I'd even go as far to say that your hands are dancing!
The Holy Spirit was hovering, dancing, moving in ways that made it ready to receive the command of God's Word and act...
Then, Creation happened.
Word of God + Movement of the Spirit = Will of God in Action
God gifts us with His Spirit when we call upon the name of God, our Creator, King, and Savior; surrender to Him with open hands and hearts; ask forgiveness for where we've gone wrong; and ask for Him to occupy our entire life and being. God's Spirit holds His character and will. Thus, the very nature and purpose of God is placed inside of us!
However, this Spirit is not stagnant. It is a rushing river, a bubbling brook, and a whisper of wind. As it moves, we are urged to follow. But what if there was more? What if we not only moved BY the Sprit, but WITH the Spirit?
The power of dance is acting on what we believe by praying, surrendering, and worshipping God through the language of movement. We often pray for God's will to be done by the power of the Holy Spirit. Dance is that step of faith that says, "I will ACT in the power of the Holy Spirit."
Take a moment an hold your hands out and hover them as you did before. Pray this prayer:
Father, you are my Creator.
Thank you for creating me and loving me.
As your Holy Spirit was ready to produce your Word and accomplish your purpose in the world, please let your Holy Spirit move in me and accomplish your will in my life.
Please show me what I need to do to be poised and ready to act WITH your Holy Spirit.
Please reveal to me what might be hindering me from openly receiving and freely moving according to your Word.
Please give me the courage to act.
Please give me the freedom to move WITH you.
Teach me the steps and hold my hand along the way.
Teach me to enjoy acting in surrender and faith, and dancing by and with your Spirit so that others can see you in my life.
